Foster Care

When children cannot stay with their birth families for any reason, foster care can provide a stable home enabling children and young people to pursue lives of normalcy, stability, love and success.

There are different types of foster care required for children in out of home care. This is because each child’s situation may be different; some children can safely return to their birth family home after a period in care where as other children may need a carer for a longer period of time.

Could you and your family provide this care? Types of care:

- Immediate care of a child for a few days, often at short notice
- Respite care for a few days or regular weekends to provide respite for long-term carers
- Short-term care from a few months’ duration to two years until a child can safely return to their birth family home, or is placed with a long-term carer
- Long-term care which may be until a child reaches 18 years or is adopted from foster care
- Kinship care where children are looked after by a relative when they cannot remain at home
